The Lay Organization
Each member of the A.M.E. Church, with the exception of clergy, are known as Lay Members or the Laity of the church and are encouraged to become active participants in the Lay organization. The goal of the Lay is to promote the support and participation of laity in the various programs of the church. The laity is also responsible for conducting stimulating studies to educate lay persons with regards to the laws and guidelines laid out in the Discipline of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
Board of Stewards
Members of the Board of Stewards are nominated by the pastor and confirmed by the Quarterly Conference. This board is responsible for assisting the pastor in keeping the membership on a high and sound spiritual level. Their primary concern is with records of the church membership including new members, baptisms, transfers in and out, marriages, births, deaths; welfare of the sick and poor; support of the pastor and presiding elder;collection and payment of connectional claims; travel expenses to conferences/connectional meetings of pastor and delegates.
Board of Trustees
Members of the Trustees Board are elected by the church membership to manage all temporal affairs of the church including operations, maintenance, mortgage, insurance, and to oversee care of the church building and other properties owned by the church. They do not own the church properties but manage it at the will of the membership.
Stewardess Board
Stewardesses are women who are appointed by the pastor to serve as special assistants to the stewards in taking care of the physical arrangements for the pulpit, the Lord's Supper, baptism, the sick, the poor and other activities as needed. Stewardesses are nominated by the pastor and confirmed by the stewards.
Class Leaders
The members of every local church are divided into small groups called classes. Each class has a leader whose business it to look after its members and report to the Official Board concerning their status, and needs, both spiritually and otherwise. Class leaders are appointed by the pastor.
Josephine Sink Women's Missionary Society
The purpose of the Missionary Society is to help each woman and youth grow in the knowledge and experience of God through His Son, Jesus Christ, thus challenging them to respond to /god's redemptive plan in the world. The Missionary Society shall endeavor to make possible opportunities and resources to meet the changing needs and concerns of women and youth through intensive training, recruitment, and Christian witnessing.
